How so re mechanical overhaul, @alms?
The major mechanical changes I can think of are gems having sockets rather than relying on items, and an intention to drop fewer, higher-quality items. Those two alone won’t change it to be much more like any others. They’re retaining all the stuff that scares people, like the skill web, the countless currencies, the Atlas-based endgame, the Ascendancies and, for better or worse, the terminal inability to respec much (which would be the biggest thing to change to make it more like other games).
However I know I’m missing some stuff!
Oddly the one change I see which does make it look more like other ARPGs isn’t the mechanics but the aesthetics. PoE2 looks very Dark Souls-ish and as such significantly more generic and closer to Grim Dawn and Diablo IV than POE was.
@trjp I think a lot rests on Diablo IV. Either it’s stunning at launch or Blizzard, like Bethesda, Bungie and Bioware, becomes regarded with sadness and once-greatness in a broader way (Bungie at least could recover fairly easily, the others less so). The latest WoW expansion looks, well, unexciting, and it’s lower price bodes oddly poorly.
