In-flight screenie to make up for the somewhat technical WoT that follows
I’m not sure if I got your explanation right, I’m leaning on yes, it works the same way for other technologies. Basically you want your best upgrades to touch as many other “blocks” of the same type as possible. Upgrade Modules interact boosting one another, with a compounded effect.
If you do install upgrade technologies, not just upgrades, as is the typical case for Hyperdrive, some trial and error may be necessary for min/maxing. Upgrade techs are also available for weapons, shield, etc, but generally I find them a bit ineffective compared to S-Class Upgrade Modules, and often leave them out to save space.
Guppy – for some reason the Thrusters are shown in basically the same color as the Hyperdrive, but the two techs do not interact with each other.
For the XL8 I have both screenshots, Hyperdrive has fewer upgrades, not sure which starship may be more useful as an example, hence I’m posting both.
Note how the Guppy has a significantly lower total DP than the XL8 – while it is true the latter has a higher core value of roughly 200 VS 180, the Guppy doesn’t have 3 S-Class upgrades for the Photon Cannon IIRC. It may have only one.
For each hit, it should be displaying how much damage was done, when in doubt I use this as a comparison.
These days I’m only using the Photon Cannon because of its satisfying combination of range and damage; when upgraded it doesn’t overheat easily IME. I tested a number of other weapons but overall I don’t exactly feel a need for anything else, for normal dogfighting with the ships I currently have.
On a ship of lesser fighting ability, like The Triumph (S-Class Shuttle), I used a combination of Photon Cannon to soften up the target, and Phase Beam at close quarters (as an added bonus this is more practical for mining)
Actually, my current ships may be hitting perhaps a bit hard for ordinary fights. Shooting without any particular accuracy I can eat perhaps 80 to 90% of the health bar of an average pirate before they even get in range to shoot their lasers, unless they’re really close.
The Shark Fin has only the Photon Cannon with no upgrades whatsoever, and I didn’t perceive a problem with some light daily driving-like tasks, although the ship’s not outfitted for that role.
With that said, I haven’t done the Nexus Pirate missions alone for a while.
PS: I did buy an entry level ship for experimenting, but only learned that Heat Dispersion is factored into DP, too. Since I’m saving up for 50,000 Nanites, and hit a dry spell for Residual Goop (doh), I didn’t want to spend more on better upgrades, for now the experiment is postponed.
