They only just introduced ‘Low Flight’ (one of the most popular mods since launch) as a default option to the game with this latest update, and from what i’ve read you are still better off using one of the flight control changing mods to the default game.
I think it is more that the game was designed around the controller (and PS4) more than a PC game, in relation to many aspects, BUT having tried the controller (£30 down the toilet, cherching!), while it is nice to be able to look around the cockpit view when in flight (using the second analog stick to move the view), actually using the controller in the on-ground fps situation (the majority of your game time), it is horribly inaccurate for all the mining (grinding) you need to do in the game.
The mouse+keyboard is 100% accurate in comparison and mining is far less cumbersome and far faster with the mouse+keyboard, you can even get properly creative and make nice sculptures, which i imagine is very hit and miss on the controller (i did not even try, it just felt so inferior in terms of accuracy).
A joystick would be possibly even worse than a controller for all that on ground fps/mining/shooting stuff gameplay. As i said this is not a flight sim, it’s a world exploration sim if anything.
(looks at games in play)
Football Manager 2011, nope; navigating all those menus with accuracy is required.
(modded)Civ IV, nope; Moving units around with a mouse is far quicker.
OpenXcom, nope; again unit movement and menus.
(modded)Minecraft maybe…hmmm, nope too many hot keys used.
Massively Modded Fallout 3/Morrowind/Oblivion, nope; i need all those keyboard controls, maybe Skyrim could work as it is streamlined?
(modded) Tropico 4, nope; just faster and more accurate placement with a mouse+keyboard.
No Man’s Sky was designed for the controller, and i found it inferior in every way except for allowing you to look around your cockpit during flight? I guess i just don’t play many console-like games? It is a £30 dust-gatherer now (the controller), a little like my consoles themselves.
In other NMS ‘news’, apparently it is the ‘top seller’ in both Steam and GOG currently (i think the sale offer price is over now, so it may quickly drop).
