I heard about the inventory being atrocious, but there’s other games that work or come on consoles and they still have perfectly good inventory systems.
What I’m saying is, you can do good design work or you can do crappy design work, your game doesn’t have to live or die simply because it works on a console as well.
It always sounded like certain (many) parts of NMS are not nearly as well designed as they should, that was my take-away from reading John’s opinion of it, after launch: that there may a special something, yet buried under a metric tonne of less than stellar design.
They must have been working almost non-stop on the game to get it where it is, retooling the UI may not have been at the top of priorities. Remember how much flak they’ve got for launching with a smaller feature set than expected, and with more than its fair share of technical issues?
The issue seems to me, whether they intend to do something about it, or are they thinking there is no problem? The latter would seem unlikely, though not impossible, because it’s been widely criticized is my understanding.
