I recently updated my system with a brand spanking new 5800x. Hooray.
Only problem is, it doesn’t boot. Booooo.
I had issues right from the start in getting it going, always with the mobo’s LED lights showing it failing at the VGA stage (the motherboard is a Gigabyte Aorus X570 Ultra). At this time, the screen was just showing the splash screen and never proceeding beyond that, so I couldn’t get into the BIOS.
Eventually, I managed to get it to boot after removing one of my disc drives that has a weird IDE to SATA adapter on it (long story involving a Wii emulator). I assumed the issue was related to that and thought all was well.
Testing it for a bit in Hitman 3, all seemed fine. After about 40 minutes though and whilst just in the menus the system hard crashed, hanging for about 10 seconds before the system turned off. Things booted back up and all seemed fine again. The error log didn’t appear to say anything of use. I used the system for a couple of hours later in CK3 with no issues.
That evening, I brought the system out of sleep, went to open up the GOG launcher and the system jammed again. This time though it would not boot. Again, I was getting to the same stage, with the LED lighting up for VGA and getting stuck there. This time though, nothing was being displayed on the screen and my monitor was claiming it wasn’t recieving a signal (the screen would light up as if it was getting a signal when first booting, but would then say there was no signal).
I’ve tried a different GPU with the same result; I’ve tried taking out all bar one RAM stick and then switched to a different stick; I’ve tried a different PSU; I’ve tried taking out all the drives. Always I got the same result of it reaching that same point.
For obvious reasons, I haven’t been able to try the CPU, but I assumed it was fine as the mobo was getting beyond that point. A faulty mobo seemed the obvious cause. So, I returned it to the store at the end of last week (CCL). I’ve now heard back from them and they have said that the mobo has posted and passed diagnostic test. So, it would seem that the mobo is fine and that something else is going on.
I am hoping that the fault does not lie with the CPU and it isn’t another part that I need to send back and go through this whole process with the store again. Does anyone have any thoughts as to what else could be causing this or does it really look like it must be the CPU?
