I’m looking for recommendations on manufacturers/builders for a 13-14" (preferably) laptop; I used to have a (slightly upgraded) MSI GX640 gaming laptop that just broke catastrophically.
I don’t want a gaming machine per se - I need something a bit more portable (smaller and less than 2.7kg), longer lasting (More than 90 mins battery life under light use) and cooler (not heating up to testicle melting level, and without a fan that sounds like a small Airbus) - but I’d like to be able to run games around the same level as on the old one (X-Com, Civ4, FM, that sort of thing mostly), so I’m not keen on the myriad HD4000 based models.
(i.e. I want to be able to take it on a train or plane for work, or play games if I get bored on holiday)
RAM and HD aren’t a concern - I have new-ish spares for the former and can buy a small boot drive SSD* for the latter if there’s not one installed by default - but I do want a decent CPU (I’m guessing it has to be i7 for a mobile quad core?) for occasional programming purposes. I’ve seen a few models that use an 860M, but they’re still explicitly gaming laptops with the heat/battery issues that entails - I could do with an older / weaker card so long as it’s comparable to my old laptops (Mobility) HD4850.
Which makes it bloody unlikely such a configuration exists, but if there’s anywhere that someone might know, it’s here.
*the only issue being that I’m undecided whether to go full Ubuntu or use a dual-boot, which does have some impact on the size needed.
