NewThe Good Life is up on Fig. A RPG mystery adventure from Hidetaka “SWERY” Suehiro (Deadly Premonition). As a American journalist and photographer you will try to balance repaying your debts with solving a murder mystery in the quaint English village you have moved to. A village with dark secrets and where all the inhabitants (including you) magically turn into cats at night. So Harvest Moon meets Midsomer Murders with a dash of Studio Ghibli “Europe charmingly filtered through Japanese sensibilities” atmosphere?

PCGamesN has an article about it. Not a fan of the generic perky JRPG protagonist concept to be honest (if she is going to act and sound like a bubbly and naive Japanese schoolgirl, why make her a grown up New York journalist?), but sounds intriguing and original enough that I backed it anyway. Already has a respectable $138 000, though that is only 9% of the total $1.5M needed, so if it follows the common crowdfunding pattern of getting 1/3rd in the beginning, 1/3rd the last couple of days and the remaining 1/3rd in the lull in the middle, it needs to pick up the pace to make it.

Cultist Simulator is rapidly approaching 200% funded, so I’m happy. Alexis Kennedy wrote a thoughtful post where he explained that he decided having hardly any stretch goals at all, since planning and budgeting for games is hard enough as it is. Any additional money will go into making the game better, that’s all. “The only stretch goal I ever want to see is ‘will roll with the punches as the true scope of the game reveals itself to us’.”. He probably will have a physical tarot deck with gods/monsters/characters from the game as one stretch goal though. And one mystery high stretch goal that he says he is considering adding but honestly doesn’t expect to reach. A big future expansion? Cultist Simulator 2?. More news on whatever it is in the coming week. In the meantime he jokingly has wholesome-meme type goals like “make my girlfriend a delicious cup of tea at $49000.”

He also gave a shout-out to Pip on Twitter for spotting one of the influences for the game.

Forbidden Unit a turn-based tactical sci-fi RPG set in a dystopian future. I’m not sure how I feel about the visuals; the cel-shaded graphics make it kind of look like a comic book. Anyway, gameplay seems promising if you like turn-based combat. They are obviously not going to reach their goal but still no reason to avoid backing it.

Perhaps after couple more years we also see something else from That Which Sleeps than “screenshots” of the map. Nah…

I’m surprised that you can no longer invest in The Good Life - clearly people have faith in it! The investment terms seemed much more generous than other FIG titles (I can’t recall the specifics and they’re no longer posted, but the number of titles it had to sell to turn a profit for investors was a small fraction of Pillars 2. Part of me is regretting not putting more than $100 down).

Scorn - part 1 of 2. Second attempt to Kickstart this, plus they have funds from Humble. Alice wrote about it on the frontpage. Looks like it’s going better this time. €75,030 pledged of €150,000 goal, 32 days to go.

Iron Oath is also approaching 200%. 21 hours left.

The Good Life - pledges keep trickling in, they have reached 14% / $218,534, so there is still a chance if this keeps up, 35 days remaining.

Celestial Tales the hand-drawn JRPG is nearing 100%, 12 days to go.

Skywanderers has also surpassed 200% with 21 days to go.

That’s a lot of good campaigns going. Meanwhile, I finally got around to playing the Sunless Skies beta; I’m cautiously excited it’ll be more fun than the original.

[/quote]So was I apparently. I really thought it was a mistake when these mails from itch.io showed up, I have absolutely no memory of this game. They made a Kickstarted update yesterday though, so that explains how I got involved. I must have written off that cash many years ago to have forgotten the name so completely, but if I actually get a game out of it, that’s fine by me.

I give the guy some respect for finally standing up and taking acceptance of what’s happened and for intending to finish the game off.

What I don’t like is that the finished product that we’re going to get, is very different to the game that was proposed in the Kickstarter. Where before it was a real time squad game (aka Syndicate), it’s now more of a generic action game with control of only 1 character.

Joyous news! For me, at least. The dev of one of my favourite games ever, Lifeless Planet, is Kickstarting Lifeless Moon. I’m not sure if it’s a sequel as such but it looks like more of the same, which I’m very happy with.

IQSoup launched a second Kickstarter to speed along the completion of their Wild West / Steampunk RPG “Age of Grit”. Combat is turn-based, between steam-powered air ships. $12 Early bird for a copy of the game.

MuHa Games have gone back to Kickstater for Thea 2: The Shattering the sequel to the wonderful Thea: The Awakening.

Thea 2: The Shattering

Thea is a turn-based strategy game where you a god from Slavic mythology helping a village survive in a harsh world. Combat is done with a card based system, and adventures are with a text based choose your own adventure style.

I have a broken finger and one hand in plaster so typing is a pain. Probably won’t post very often the next month. But:

Evolution. PC port of a popular boardgame, more or less instantly funded.

Also Numenera 2. P&p rpg not PC but I thought ppl might be interested, since “Torment: Tides of…” . Was funded in 30 minutes. Expensive tiers though

Miss Fisher the movie. Even less PC games, but it’s a series I like.

Good Life has slowed down significantly, won’t,make it at this rate.

Cyanide & Happiness passed $400 000. Another point & click to look forward to.

Cultist Simulator approaching £70 000, if he passes around 100K it will be as much as the first Sunless Sea got. May it lead to equally awesome things.

Speaking of, Divinity OS 2 is a massive critical and sales success. Old school RPGs are having a great Renaissance, and much of it is thanks to crowdfunding.

I honestly don’t get why Good Life has flopped so hard. The visual design is wonderful, it has a good pitch, it’s the sort of game that has sometimes sold oodles on Steam (Stardew Valley) and what happened to the seemingly-huge cult of Deadly Premonition fans?
