I can honestly say I haven’t noticed any problems with the image compression on my laptop.
If I go and look at the This is the Police screens and put my face 6 inches from the screen then I can see the artifacting that you’re talking about… but I’d never have noticed it in the course of regular browsing.
Comes from having a
massive tract of land screen I guess.
Interestingly, the images are either getting compressed dynamically on the back end, or they’ve prepared a huge load of possible resolutions.
Though the base image is already pretty compressed, so even if you go up to 100% quality, it won’t go over about 102kb.
Personally, I’d rather have compressed images than the old situation of each page of RPS being about 4Mb of downloads. But they should probably implement retina images for higher resolution screens such as massive desktop ones or ipads.
