Early in August, I did an upgrade on my GPU to a 2080 Super. Things have been going fine until quite recently I have started getting a fair few random crashes to the desktop, with no error message. First, this was in Battlefield V. This initially seemed to be connected to the Effects quality setting, with it crashing whenever it was set to Ultra. Lowering the setting seemed to help, but I was getting some really middling performance. I put that down to the poor optimisation of the game and didn’t think too much of it.
I then was starting to get regular crashes in Shadow of the Tomb Raider. These would be seemingly at random and this time accompanied by an error that just generically said “A problem has occured with your display driver. Your system may not have enough resources to run the game at the selected settings. etc.” It ends with a code and "DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG. With further testing, this seemingly happens about 20 minutes or so into playing. I’ve just played through the final section (for about 40 minutes) without any crashing, but it then crashed again when I ran the benchmark and it reached the Paititi section (so, might be linked to the more open/demanding areas of the game).
Lastly, I was playing Apex Legends last night, a far less demanding game than either Tomb Raider or Battlefield, and got the same crash to desktop. This came after quite an extensive time playing (about 2 hours). Everything seemed absolutely fine, until it just froze for a few seconds and crashed to the desktop. With this, I was getting an error saying something about possibly not having enough RAM for the game.
My specs are as below and I don’t think they should really be having issues with any of these games.
16GB DDR4 RAM @ 3000Mhz
MSI Ventus Geforce RTX 2080 Super
Coolermaster 600w Silent Pro
I’ve used HWmonitor to keep an eye on temperatures and everything seems to be running within safe levels (GPU hits about mid 70s and CPU is high 60s/low 70s.) My only slight hardware concern is that it could be related to my PSU, which is slightly under the 650w recommendation for the 2080 Super, but nothing on my system is overclocked and checking on power usage estimate sites, my system shouldn’t be going much above ~450w under load, so shouldn’t be causing any real issues, besides maybe not being as efficient as a more powerful one would be.
I feel like it is a software issue, but I have made sure my Windows updates are all up to date and, so are my GPU drivers (I did a wipe with Device Driver Uninstaller and reinstalled today, still same problem). Tempted to try a complete Windows reinstall, but would rather avoid that if possible.
Any one have any thoughts on what could be causing this?
Edit: another look at power consumption estimates and it is actually saying about 522w, so my 600w could well be a cause of this. Does that seem likely and is there anyway to test that for sure?
