Try Crystal Story II. It’s a very charming modern RPG that just hits the spot for the JRPG nostalgia I craved, but without most of the bullshit the genre used to have. I’m currently playing the first one on Kongregate before going for the sequel, but it’s absolutely not necessary.

Oh, and steer away from Plants vs Zombies 2. I used to like it, but EA completely destroyed the games with massive updates that made it into something very different (now almost as shamefully cash-grabbing as Dungeon Keeper, btw)

^And keep in mind the visuals in these versions are really crummy compared to the originals, especially in terms of effects, despite the higher resolution, they look like real crap compared to even the PS2 versions

So I’m looking for a decent RPG on a newly purchased Android phone that’s slightly more powerful than my laptop. Times, they move fast.

I don’t want casual. I don’t want repetitive grinding. I don’t understand the appeal of Candy Crush Saga, I don’t get why everyone loves Tiny Towers or Marvel Heroes or whatever reskins there are of Angry Birds.

The closest I have come to perfection so far is the Lone Wolf Saga, an absolutely outstanding conversion of my favourite Choose Your Own Adventure books. It’s so perfect that I donated a couple of bucks to the guy who did this. Very nicely done.

I am rather annoyed that King Of Dragonpass is still only available to those iOS Zombies - I guess I am looking for similar games. Or, you know, proper RPGs with more than “fight, magic, flee” options. Not a big fan of the modern rendition of The Bard’s Tale, though I might grab that just for Bard’s Tale 1 - 3.

They also have a phone exclusive series called Chaos Rings that I wouldn’t touch with a ten foot flagpole.

FF Dimensions is supposedly good, but I’m not going to vouch for it as I have not played it.

FF All The Bravest is in the same league of Dungeon Keeper for Android, and I’m not even going to link it.

It should be noted that all of these (except the phone exclusive ones like Chaos Rings, All the Bravest, and Dimensions) can easily be played for free on Android using a SNES emulator, easy enough to get a good free version of SNES9x for Android via the webnetz, and I would recommend doing that above anything else.

I bought Ravensword: Shadowlands and found it unremittingly awful. It’s like an RPG from about ten years ago prettied up with some slightly fancier shaders - dull, empty world, tiny areas rigidly partitioned up by levels (you *will not *survive if you walk into the “wrong” map), crude, unsatisfying combat, tissue-thin story and lore… utter rubbish that I’m convinced people are only playing because OMG it is Skyrim on my phone!!!11!1! No, it’s not. It’s really not. It is functionally almost identical to this, only with better-looking graphics (and even then the world’s just as empty and lifeless).

I’m grumpy because mister Walker deleted a post of mine off the front page because shock, horror, I dared to suggest PC gamers like to dismiss mobile gaming out of hand for the slightest, often completely imaginary reason, and that the majority of people who comment on Android gaming sites are idiots who don’t want to pay for things. Yeah. No evidence for that at all. Just me being rude, and generalising, and nothing to do with why people basically pass up a superb series like Chaos Rings because OMG, how dare you charge me $10 for a game when I could just load up an emulator to play the same over-rated ancient SNES relics I’ve been idolising beyond all reason for the past *twenty years. *:rolleyes:

Googling, I see there’s something called Battle for Mars but I’ve never tried it before. I’m installing the trial version now.

As for the ones I have tried, I can recommend Great Little War Game (and its sequel), Hero Academy, Frozen Synapse, and M&M: Clash of Heroes.

Okay, Ravensword 2 is utter shite - at least the 60 minutes I tried to play it. Even disregarding the atrocious camera controls that make turning 90 degrees a core that lasts up to three seconds each time you do not want to move straight ahead, the game is bland and the combat is remarkably boring.

Oh well, at least the engine itself and the models are quite impressive, even though the textures are very poor.

I’m stuck with Lone Wolf then. Which are really, really excellent!

I admit to not playing Ravensword 2 that much after getting it in a Humble Bundle. The controls put me off as well but, yeah, it does look purdy.

There’s also The Bard’s Tale, Shadowrun Returns, and Avernum: Escape from the Pit if you are familiar with their PC counterparts.

I’ve also heard good things about Horn especially since the developer was able to wrest control of its game from Zynga.

I got Shadowrun Returns and the entire Avernum series already on the bigger screen though, but I actually might consider rebuying Avernum for the phone. It’s been a while, and the replay value is strong in that one.

Told you. Absolute rubbish, and I’m still convinced this stuff only sells because your mainstream phone/tablet user will buy anything if they think they’re getting a “proper” game for only a couple of monies or so.

I keep meaning to try Lone Wolf, but I’ve no idea how well it’s doing and if the devs will actually be able to get the other episodes done - I heard the first one’s pretty short, too.

The port of Wesnoth for Android is actually pretty good. I had to turn the resolution down on my S3, but it uses a touch-controlled cursor rather than direct touch for the controls, so it stays accurate. There’s a couple - I got the one by Alessandro Pira (sp?), and it’s perfectly serviceable. Definitely worth it for a pound.

Hearthstone iPad is probably out in April, hope the Android version is not to far behind.
