I’ve got a Surface Pro 4 / i5 / 8GB / 256 GB. I’m hard pressed to call it a tablet. It’s a tablet in form factor, but not in function. I’ve got Android and iOS tablets, and one of the defining things about them is that they’re instant-on. It changes how you do things, because it’s no big deal to turn it off or let the screen time out. Just tap the button and it’s back.
Not so the Surface - even if it’s just timed out recently, there’s a very significant delay while it wakes up and starts doing its facial-recognition thing. Turning it off is a big deal, and I’m annoyed if I have to close the cover and move, because I know turning it on again is going to be slow.
It’s still a good machine. It’s the thinnest, lightest Windows laptop I’ve ever used. But functionally, it’s still a laptop, not a tablet, because the delay for waking it up is so significant.
It’s been fairly good for portable gaming. Mostly what has tripped me up was games that don’t handle touch interfaces or styluses well. The stylus mostly behaves like a mouse, and it’s been great for Photoshop in the field, but it’s not exactly like a mouse and some games balk at the difference. You can hover with it, which is a huge advantage compared to touch screens, but games that want you to right click frequently are a huge pain.
You can of course use an actual mouse with it, but now you’re carrying around a second peripheral, and you need a surface for the mouse.
The keyboard / kickstand combination is fine on my lap. I don’t typically use it that way, but it’s not really a huge problem. Maybe a bit more sensitive to jostling than the typical tablet case / stand combo. Note that the issue is mostly the fact you’re using the built-in kickstand rather than a case with a flat bottom. The keyboard isn’t the problem.
I do highly, highly recommend the Type Cover. It’s as lightweight as one of the official Apple iPad covers, and it’s a fine keyboard, much better feeling than most cheap desktop membrane-type keyboards. I’ve heard the Surface Pro 3’s Type Cover isn’t as good as the 4’s, though.
