No worries, it’s first and foremost horror and survival, though combat is of course also quite important. At first its just melee with a few traps thrown in before firearms become more important. Ammo is always limited though.
On Normal difficulty death does only have consequences insofar as that you lose some items, which you need to get back if you died far away from home. Dying in the hideout during the night mostly just means that you won’t get reputation with the trader, which is needed to buy things like ammo, crafting materials and so on.
During the night gameplay is about preparation and possibly combat. Barricading doors and laying traps, that kind of thing. Personally I liked that part of the game the most.
