I can’t speak for Discord in any way as their fatal flaw for me is that as a ‘social network’ they’re blocked at my office so I can’t ever follow any links to it.
But just from that short list there is some overlap with Origin Access too.
Twitch Freebies and Humble Trove are a bit different from Origin Access though, as they’re theoretically just ‘nice extras’ to the main course that is Prime / The monthly bundle.
Whereas with Origin Access they’re the main course.
Even the Trove is a little different from Twitch Freebies as those are time limited (which is a bit more like the Monthly Bundle itself) , whereas you can access all the Trove games at any time (which is a bit more like Origin Access).
While I agree it’s a minor miracle, and I like the idea of drm free stuff that I can keep, I wonder how much of it was simply down to not having the tech to control access.
Also, in practice, I don’t really have a problem with how things like Origin Access (or prime video or netflix etc…) do things, as it’s pretty convenient and it means I don’t have to worry about missing games if I don’t grab them at that time, or subscribe that month.
Theoretically, I guess it’d be a great deal to sign up to Humble for a month and just download all the installers for all the trove games to keep… but practically I can’t be bothered and I don’t want the hassle of dealing with all the files and loss of storage space.
But yeah, it is nice to have a broad range of options these days.
My Origin Access trial expires today and I haven’t finished Rime… so it’s tempting to resub for an extra month… which is of course just what they planned!. I don’t think I will though, but it saves your progress so if you resub later you can carry on.
Overall, I’d say it’s a nice service and the client seems fine.
The ‘pro’ compared to twitch is that you can access all the games at any time, even the ones they added in the past. The ‘con’ is that I felt pressure to finish all the games before my subscription expired… and that I didn’t really want to start a long game like Pillars of Eternity as I knew that’d be locking me in for many months.
