City of Brass is 60% off, new lowest price. I liked the look of it when it got covered a while back, so I bought it, and it’s not bad. As a first-person roguelike, I enjoy it a lot more than Ziggurat, even though the melee combat is a little bland. The whip mechanics definitely elevate it, though: you can trip enemies, pull them, disarm them, and stun them depending on where you whip them. Both the whip and your main hand weapon can be upgraded, along with powerups for armor, boots, etc., and they never feel like they do nothing or have only marginal benefits.
I must admit that it doesn’t hold a candle to truly great action roguelikes like Nuclear Throne but it has its hooks in me anyway. I keep dying from my own dumb mistakes and it makes me want to do better and go further. That, at least, counts heavily in its favour. So check it out if you want to whip some skeletons in an Arabian Nights setting.
