Given that they got bought out, and they’re bringing on new staff for loads of previously uncovered areas like Hardware and Video, I can imagine that they’re working on a site redesign.
(I suspect the fact that they seemingly couldn’t afford to update their site might be one of the reasons they needed to be bought out).
The longer a site / forum has been running and the more data it has, the harder it becomes to do redesigns and integrations.
I mean, if I was setting up the site now, I’d almost certainly integrate WP and Discourse. There’s a plugin that’ll do it for you, and having a single account that worked across both would really help.
But implementing that now becomes much more risky. They’ll have thousands of users on both sides (even if many are inactive) and it’s almost certain to have some kind of hiccup and data clash.
That’s why they need the resources to have some people working on it full time for a decent period, and to get it up and running on an alternate server first. Rather than having someone who could look at it from time to time.
One thing I don’t like about the idea of everyone moving to Discord is that it’s not publicly searchable. I find a lot of useful info in various forums, and if that all moves to Discord then it all becomes effectively invisible.
