Two interesting bits of information just leaked out of a podcast. The first is that the Chieftain might just become my new favourite ship. It’s a medium-sized ship, bigger than the Asp X (I’m guessing about Dropship size), with 2 C3 hardpoints, one C2 (guess where my railgun is going) and three C1 hardpoints. Supposed to be quite agile, too, which is quite welcome - we need more decent medium combat ships, and also supposedly reasonably affordable. But most important of all, there’s no rank requirement! Guess what I’ll be buying immediately.
The second, is that wing missions will be available for solo players as well, but tuned for wings. Which is great news for me, finally something for my big, super-tanky ships to really sink their teeth into apart from Thargoids.
Edit: okay, the first livestream (of 3) is over. A truly epic showing of incompetence, ignorance of basic game mechanics and general idiocy on Ed’s part, but no matter. The Crime and Punishment system is pretty much unchanged from the feedback forum, which is great - it means SDC and other organised griefer gangs didn’t get to neuter it.
As for wing missions (and missions in general), I do generally like what is on offer. First of all, we will now be given a selection of 3 mission rewards to pick from, meaning we can potentially be rid of the scourge of the pointless cargo reward forever (or until we’ve unlocked Marco Fucking Quent). Secondly, wing missions can be completed over multiple runs for the cargo-hauling missions, rather than having to be done all at once. This isn’t being implemented for regular missions in Q1, but it’s coming eventually. Rewards are also going to be higher than for regular missions - this wasn’t really evident in the dev build, because it’s still a work in progress, but I suspect they’re going to be a lot higher than normal. Assassination missions also promise to be a lot more difficult, with heavily engineered targets that will require a lot of effort to put down (yay, human ships that can put up a fight!). I’m a bit suspicious of wing massacre missions, since if implemented wrong they could end up just being even more tedious than the single-player ones, but that remains to be seen. Also, I haven’t seen any evidence of wing delivery missions having a stronger pirate presence and more aggressive NPC interdictions, which is a shame because it would be nice to have a bit of opposition during those.
Also, it’s a bit disappointing to see that there aren’t any new mission types, but it’s still early days. We’ve got the whole of 2018 to look forward to where fixes for game systems are concerned. The one thing that’s conspicuous by its absence is Powerplay (okay, and CQC, but nobody cares about that anyway), which has not been mentioned at all in the developer roadmap or in the livestreams. Perhaps it’ll get looked at in Q4 or in the Q2 and Q3 minor updates, but I’m honestly not holding out much hope.
Bunch more stuff on Thursday and next Tuesday, looking forward to it.
