That’s pretty misleading.
Relative to WC1, WC2 and WC3 contain countless retcons and changes. Almost none of the lore that is most popular from the WC series is true in WC1, and acting like there was just one big retcon in WC3 is ridiculous. WC2 retcons the shit of WC1, and WC3 out of WC2. Only with WoW did the brakes even get touched with the retcons (and only somewhat). WC1 in particular literally doesn’t even make sense by it’s own standards. For example, in WC1’s manual, Garona claims to be half-human and half-orc, but the timeline of the game (and even the lore laid out by the manual) means that is completely impossible (which is why that got later retcon’d to half-Draenei).
I think it’s a very unproductive behaviour that is pretty much as bad as the one it professes to counter.
“Well this game isn’t FOR people like YOU!” has frequently been a shitty attitude, and frequently directed at female and minority gamers, and before you say otherwise, it is ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS phrased as “helpful advice” and “just being honest” and “a good thing”, as you say, no matter how exclusionary the intentions, no matter how dismissive, high-handed or smug the person saying it.
Very occasionally it is well-meant, but the usage of it in bad or partially bad faith wildly occludes that. The underlying message is typically “shut up and go away, heretic”. It’s very often seen when a beloved game series takes a drastic turn in a new direction - but sometimes it’s not even that - a game can continue a direction and the fanbase can change.
Warframe is an example. Back when it was a slightly obscure game a few years ago, the general attitude was that the developers were overcomplicating things a bit and there should better tutorials and guidance in-game and so on, and soloing should be perfectly fine.
Cut to now, like three or four years later, and the prevailing “community” attitude is that you shouldn’t expect to play Warframe without watching multiple 30+ minute youtube videos, or reading dozens of pages of text, and shouldn’t expect to play solo at all (even though you totally can) are maybe a bad person if you want to.
And of course if anyone disagrees, even if they’re an old-school Warframe player like me, they’re told “helpfully” (ahem) that “Warframe isn’t a game for you.”.
They never would, and it is never devs saying this, outside of the Indiesphere anyway. In fact Blizzard specifically said “THIS GAME IS FOR YOU!”. That’s what the “Do you guys not have phones?” question is about. So not sure why you’re exploring that particular impossible hypothetical.
