You’re not really in the minority, it’s just the Fortnite players are super-desperate to play Fortnite, because it’s a cultural phenomenon as much as anything else. Plus it actually plays less awfully than most things on phone. My understand is that the majority of people playing at any given time are on PC or console, and given the cross-platform deal, and the fact that it requires pretty high-end (and thus expensive) phones, I strongly suspect virtually everyone playing it on phone at school or on the bus or whatever goes home to a console to play it there (certainly the only IRL Fortnite players I know do), because only people who can afford consoles have phones that expensive (broadly speaking).
There are good games on phones and there are lots more “okay” ones. There are even good ones which require reflexes, like Cytus 2, which I was turned on to by people here at the RPS forums.
But there are no combat-oriented action-RPGs that are any good (that I’m aware of) on phones. And it’s not for lack of trying. There have been huge numbers of attempts, but they’ve just all been dire-to-mediocre. None provide the same TYPE of fun that a Diablo-clone does, and they all get un-fun pretty quickly, even by mobile standards.
Some games are better fits for some platforms, and mobile is not a good fit for fiddly, fast-reflexes ARPGs.
As for this, it looks preeeeety bad. Like NetEase have made better games - hell, it seems to be using the engine from their mobile MMO, which looks WAY better than this sub-D3 nonsense.
Blizzard made a big mistake by announcing it with literally nothing else. I mean, anything, anything at all, would have made this just into “Ugh I guess we wait, maybe I’ll play this dumb mobile game in the meantime”, where instead they now have “OMG FUCK YOU BLIZZARD!!!” going at max volume. I mean, it’s not like they need to SHOW D4 or anything. All they had to do was vaguely say something that amounted to “We’re making D4”. But no. Arrogance, stupidity or internal politics got the better of them.
They could still recover. There is another Diablo panel, nearly the last in the 'con. If they got say, Wyatt Cheng to re-appear and do a cryptic D4 announcement, that would probably get most of the goodwill back.
If they wait for months though, which seems to be the intention, I think they’re going to do themselves some permanent rep damage which even announcing and showing D4 won’t fix, because people will have become too cynical.
