I registered just to make this post, though I will probably end up staying on the forums, as I have been lurking for a while and generally enjoy the RPS community. HOWEVER, I was extremely disappointed with the comments on the article for this trailer. Most everyone seemingly jumped on the bandwagon of, ‘she is in her underwear, therefore sexist, appeals to men, so disappointed with CDPR, etc.’ I have a few comments.
Note: I am a 19-yr-old male, so take that into consideration with my comments.
As I was watching the trailer, I saw a beautiful woman about to get shot in the face. Then the bullet simply BOUNCES OFF her face. Wow, she must be super augmented, maybe even her whole body is non-organic at this point from those augmentations. It then cuts to a bunch of police shooting at her. I immediately thought of the scene from the DX:HR trailer, with the police shooting on the innocent bystanders. Okay, police brutality. Makes sense for cyberpunk. Then it cuts back to her, and shows more bullets exploding off her bare skin, seemingly to no adverse effect to her. Then we see the blood, and the arm-blades. Then we see all the dead bodies, and the blood on her blades. We learn moments later that there are 14 people murdered, presumably by her. At this point, any ‘damsel-in-distress’ idea I may have had is gone. She is obviously psychotic, as she just murdered 14 innocent people. Now I am rooting for the police, something that I thought I would never do in a cyberpunk setting. Then robo-cop shows up, and the trailer ends. At the very end we see her again with robo-cop, though now she is like him, part of the unit that stops these psychotic killers.
The only point that I got during this trailer that they were exploiting the use of beautiful women was in the beginning, when the police were shooting at her. This was before I learned that she was a psycho, and that she had killed all those people. Once I learned that, I didn’t see her as innocent at all. She was a danger to the public that had to be stopped at all costs. I simply don’t understand how people can think this trailer is sexist in the slightest. Regarding her clothes, that made me stop for a moment, but I realized she went insane. What she was wearing, if anything, is not a concern to her at that moment, and this is backed up with the recent state of the bath salts controversy, and those people that went insane and were trying to eat human flesh. I believe a few of them were naked at the time, wearing less than the woman in the trailer. Consider also that perhaps in the future that is normal attire for a woman. I have seen plenty of girls that are wearing almost as little as that at my university, so it is not a stretch to assume that in 50+ years clothing and fashions may become more scanty. Perhaps in her cybernetics induced frenzy her clothes were ripped off, or what she is wearing is not actually underwear, it is her ‘skin.’ Someone earlier in this thread made the comment that perhaps it is a future party dress. Also easily possible. Additionally, we can assume that the augmentations that she posses are quite expensive, and it would not be a stretch to assume that she made additional modifications to make herself more beautiful. With that kind of money, she is no doubt upper-class, and if she spent that kind of money on body mods, why not show off with that kind of clothing?
I also look at it this way: if the person kneeling were a male JCPenny catalog model, wearing some sort of undergarment or even shorts, and the robo-cop was a female wearing the same armor as the man in the trailer, would we even be having this discussion? There would be discussion as to why the guy is wearing underwear, but I think that is easily answered by what I wrote above, nor is it I think important to what is actually happening in the trailer.
I don’t really think we should read to much into this as well. It is a teaser trailer, made for a game that is coming out in 2016. I don’t think that the people in the trailer will be in the game, much less will you play as them. The trailer is simply to set the mood, and introduce a potential faction in the game, along with something (psycho rampages) that you might encounter/become/deal with while playing.
On another note, I am really looking forward to this game. Who else has read all the blog posts by the dev team on the Cyberpunk 2077 blog? Really interesting stuff, and it gives me great confidence that they know what they are doing, and won’t mess it up.
