Given that the forums have been going for decades and, imho, have been a great success in terms of building a lovely community, if not in terms of pure numbers, it is kind of a shame that no-one from RPS bothered to pop in to break the news.
I know the new RPS staff have never really hung out here, and probably don’t even know it exists, but it would have been a nice gesture.
Assuming that the server costs aren’t that high, I assume it’s simply an issue of manpower needed to keep the forums ticking over, updated or troubleshoot bugs? I guess one of the reasons they seem so keen on discord is that it’s a service, so they don’t need any IT resources to keep it running.
I feel like the fact that the comments on the main site have lost most of their community feel, that the interesting articles that might generate such community discussion have apparently been moved behind the paywall, and that they’re shutting down the forum imply that they’ve given up on the site having a community and it’s just going to have readers.
But then again, maybe that’s an industry-wide trend, and I keep forgetting about the fabled Discord which may well be a community.
I certainly think our little community is worth a shot at preserving, and would be willing to help out if time commitments allow.
It would be nice to get answers on things like whether there’s any chance of preserving the data for posterity, or getting a (sanitized) copy of the discourse data if not.
Anyway, apparently my steam link is here
and I’ll also add it to the player directory:
