I’ll be honest: your post makes me pretty angry, and most around here can tell you I’m a pretty mild-mannered poster. I’m not angry because the forums are being shut down (that just makes me sad); I’m angry at pretty much everything else surrounding this, including how it was communicated.
First: there is nothing more hurtful to a community that a stranger showing up and announcing its destruction. The bare minimum you could have done is introduce yourself, tell us who you are and what your position is (I know Graham clarified below, but it’s important to do in the top post). If you ever do anything like this in the future, please do this.
Second: these forums have been very important to many people over the years, not all of whom regularly check them anymore. Your decision to nuke the archives without even emailing people or otherwise reaching out is brutal, and your breezy way of communicating that suggests that you don’t take it seriously or recognize the weight of it. It’s not at all clear why you couldn’t afford to maintain them until the end of the year, at least.
Third (and less important/more personal) the reference to “more modern community platforms” comes off as a bit condescending, like you’re addressing a group of old fuddy-duddies who won’t move off VHS. As expounded on elsewhere in this thread, Discord isn’t a good replacement for forums (and I say this as an active Discord user), and Twitter/Twitch aren’t even remotely close.
I don’t know the behind-the-scenes costs and issues of maintaining the servers; I completely believe you that a cost-benefit analysis has been made and the forums don’t justify the continued maintenance and investment. But once that decision has been made, it’s on you to execute it in as compassionate a manner as possible. This has not happened here, and I am more disappointed in RPS than I have ever been.
