I’m kind of vexed by gaming journalists, even the ones on RPS, because they consistently cynical about products from certain companies, and consistently overgenerous and wildly hyped towards products from other companies. This extends, particularly sadly, to reviews, as we saw with D:OS2 which got reviews like it was one of the greatest games ever made, when it fact it was merely a solid CRPG with a pretty shit combat system, some dodgy dialogue, a ton of content and a deeply disappointing third and fourth act (like so many CRPGs).
It is interesting how suddenly it can wear off - as with CP2077, for example, where previews went from worshipful to somewhat cautious, but here I imagine we’ll see them remain worshipful all the way to reviews, even if BG3 isn’t terribly good. We’ll probably have to put up with some eye-roll-inducing “Bestest Best” review from RPS where Brendan or someone tries to explain for several paragraphs that we’re all terrible people for liking BG1/2 and caring that BG3 isn’t connected to them and indeed barely seems to be set in the FR and TRUE GAMERZ only care how good a game is in total isolation and so on.
I guess the weird only hope here is that Early Access players include some people who actually like the FR and/or BG1/2, and thus have some choice words for Larian.
