I just found out, only a year late, I know!, about the latest SJWs VS Our Constitutional Right to Insult People Wiithout Consequence controversy concerning what I would have called, if you asked me about it point blank before, one of the most unlikely targets, a game from Amanita Design: Chuchel.
Since RPS sadly stopped at drily repeating a few of the devs’ words, I’ll have to post one from PCGamesN instead.
There’s more to it than just the mud flinging of the Us and Them discussion that apparently raged on in the comment section, and that’s what I thought was interesting; that the criticism was rooted not just in Chuchel’s appearance, but in how the whole game is built out of racist tropes. Devs have claimed they would never want their work to be perceived as racist, but as one of the two posts linked by PCGamesN, both worth reading BTW, correctly notes:
“The game’s comedy has racist overtones regardless of intent because racism has never needed to be intentional”, IOW you can be racist without willing to be racist, a view RPS themselves have publicly subscribed to, often when responding to the same defense from other devs whose works they thought worthy of being ousted for racism.
The following is some recommended read-before-you-comment from the post above and chained posts:
There’s more that’s worth of your attention in the links, among which this post about Cuphead:
