No, you haven’t, that’s the thing. It’s just that it was much easier for people to stick their head in the sand over social change before COVID and so on.
Change was long-overdue. My personal theory, which has no basis in science, purely how I see things, is that following the 1990s, where social change started speeding up, particularly re: LGBT issues, racism, even capitalism and so on, we got the 2001 terrorist attacks, followed by two wars (one entirely invalid, too, and pure imperialism), and a bunch of other distractions, which really stopped people thinking about those issues, and scared an entire generation of Americans (particularly those slightly older than me - so 45+ now). People wanted reassurance and calm and nothing to hard to think about, and the wars and so on were stress enough.
So change kind of stopped. But here we are in 2020, where a repulsive creature rules America, and attempts to drag it bodily into the 1930s, and Boris here is trying to drag Britain back into the 1940s (albeit less forcefully), or rather Cummings is. And people are angry about this. So then we have an actual spark, with the blatantly evil murder of a man begging to breathe, and all around the world, in part because of COVID removing the usual distractions of sports, drinking, “going out”, and so on, people have that they’re mad as hell, and not going to take it any more.
Interesting that violent crime isn’t issue any more (not sure it really was at the time, but whatever) - but everything else in the famous Network rant is still kind of relevant.
People have had a enough, of dim-witted 50-somethings and 60-somethings, and 70-somethings telling us that they “know what’s best”. Enough of right-wing agendas being pushed. It’s not that things have really changed, it’s just that they’re being revealed. I know you’re a little older, Tixxy, but people my age (42) and younger, they don’t agree with your attitude to trans issues. Hell, most people your age don’t. Only when you get to 55+ do they. People our age are burning with rage about racism, and how it just never ends. Even some people my parents age are. People are getting angrier and angrier about the environment. That’s not going to stop, especially not as it’s going to get worse.
You talk about the “New Radical Left”? This is the new middle. This is new normal. You can see this on Facebook really easily. People I assumed were right-wing, maybe bigots even, are coming out with clear pro-BLM memes, making clear statements that they support trans people, and so on. And yeah, most of those people who weren’t already clearly liberal are under 45, the ones who are “coming out” as actually believing in human rights and respect for others and so on.
You’ve got old mate. The world didn’t change any more than normal. It changed less than normal. That’s what confused you. Now it’s changing a bit faster to catch up with some of that lack of change, but really, the change had already happened in my generation. Who are now gradually coming in to power.
