Your a shit for bringing this up in the takedown thread, as a consequence I’ll be talking down both HLD & Dark Souls.
I can easily point out that while HLD shares properties with the Souls games its very much a different thing. HLD actually does require you to GIT GUD, Dark Souls let’s you level up, upgrade your weapons and armour and twat the bosses with souped up weapons along side high level fellows you summoned. Oh, so invaders level up proportionately? Boo hoo, like 4 vs 1 is a fair fight.
In Dark Souls the difficulty is determined by how long you grind, how many cheap tricks you employ, how much wiki you read.
HLD requires you simply be better, faster and read between lines, but not better in a transferable personal growth kind of way, you need to know and apply system, you need to know which part of sprites are real and which do things which are never plainly stated.
Often I’d endorse this self exploration, and in Starseed Pilgrim or or Antichamber, but in an action game? You are not you performing introspection, you are skinner boxing your brain. You try out iterations of plans until they click into the developers intentions.
